Foster A Sato

Foster families provide a safe environment for our pups who are in need of love and temporary comfort before placement into forever homes. We rely on a dedicated network of foster homes for our Satos to prepare them for adoption.

If you aren’t ready to adopt, providing a temporary foster home is a great way to see how a furry friend will adjust to your life.

How can I foster a Sato?

  • Fill out the Foster Application/Contract online

  • E-mail toby@tobysrescue.com if you have any questions.

  • We will schedule a phone interview within 1 week.

  • A home visit will be conducted with one of our trained volunteers. (Either virtual or in-person)

  • Let us know the supplies you need for your foster dog. (We provide martingale collar, harness, leash, food and anything else you need upon request)

  • We will reach out to you when we have a sato arriving to see if you are available. If so, we will coordinate the pick-up or drop-off with you and you will soon meet your new foster dog.

Can’t foster right now?

You can help Toby’s fosters with a donation or by being a sato escort!

Your contributions will help our foster parents with food, blankets, training supplies and lots of treats. If you are making a donation via PayPal, please use the 'send to friend' option.

What is a sato escort? A sato escort supports our mission by bringing back a sato on the plane on their return from Puerto Rico. We do make it easy by taking care of all the details, paying for the pup’s ticket and having volunteers meet you at the airports with the pup ready to travel. If your plans are taking you to Puerto Rico, please fill out our sato escort form and we will do the rest!

Foster FAQs

Can I choose my foster?

We want to make sure you are comfortable providing care for your foster Sato. To make sure that your foster is an ideal fit for you, your family and your home, we will do our best to match your specified criteria.

If we have several dogs awaiting their ticket to the DMV area, we may send you pictures and descriptions of each.

If you have already filled out a foster application, we will keep you posted on fosters needed.

How am I matched with a foster dog?

Toby’s Rescue determines which foster home will be suitable for each dog that arrives in the D.M.V. area, depending on size, age, temperament and needs. Fosters may also choose to accept or decline specific dogs based on their own best judgment about suitability.

Can I foster if I live in an apartment?

Absolutely! Although in some cases we would require a fenced back yard, it is not always necessary.

Does the foster pick the dog up at the airport or Toby HQ or does someone from Toby’s Rescue bring the dog to my home?

We negotiate this on a case-by-case basis. Ideally the foster parent has a car and is able to pick-up and drop-off the pup but we do have volunteers that can help with transports if necessary.

What costs am I responsible for?

We provide everything! We want to make it rewarding and easy to say, “Yes”. We have crates, beds, leashes, harnesses, food and clothes that fosters may borrow. All Satos arrive with a health certificate and are up- to-date on their vaccinations and have been dewormed. Depending on their age they are also spayed or neutered, However, if your Sato become sick or requires a vet visit, we ask that you first contact Toby’s Rescue for pre-approval. Otherwise, the cost of the visit will not be covered by Toby’s Rescue. If you see any sign of illness or a health issue of any kind, please let us know immediately. It is not uncommon for dogs to have an upset stomach after the stress of travel. If your foster dog is vomiting or having diarrhea for more than 24 hours, contact us immediately so we can arrange to get the pup seen by a vet.
