Adoption FAQs
Adoption Fees
$570 for Puppies under 5 months
$520 for Puppies 5-12 months
$470 Dogs 12 months+ $350 Satos over 5-years-old
Our adoption fees help us cover some of the medical and travel expenses it takes to rescue a Sato and find him a home. The care and associated costs of fostering are provided by the generosity of our foster network, but our adoption fees are necessary to bring pups in need to the D.M.V. area. These fees help us recoup the costs it takes to rehabilitate the dogs, get them health certificates and ready for travel to find happy forever homes.
*puppies under 5 months are generally not spayed/neutered yet and in order to finalize the adoption, puppies need to get spayed/neutered. The puppy will be fostered-to-adoption until the surgery is completed.
IF YOU ARE READY TO ADOPT, PLEASE FILL OUT OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION, LET US KNOW SOME GOOD TIMES TO CALL AND WE WILL SCHEDULE A CALENDAR INVITE FOR A PHONE CALL, FOLLOWED BY A VIRTUAL HOME VISIT. ONCE THIS HAS BEEN COMPLETED, YOU WILL BE PRE-APPROVED EITHER FOR A SPECIFIC DOG OR FOR DOGS THAT WILL COME UP IN THE FUTURE.
Are Satos vaccinated? Are they spayed/neutered?
Will I have health records?
Each Sato receives a medical evaluation and all necessary vaccinations before being transported to DMV. The animals will be in compliance with health protocols at the time of adoption.
The pups will have a travel certificate, they will be up to date with the mandatory vaccines, dewormed and also spayed or neutered if they are old enough (over 5 months).
Occasionally we bring puppies who are not old enough to be spayed/neutered (under 5 months). If so, we will have scheduled a date for spaying and neutering in the coming weeks because we have relationships with low-cost spay/neuter clinics. Adopters will transport the puppy to the appointment at the clinic or agree to make other arrangements with their vets for the puppy to be spayed/neutered.
Training, behavior and boarding advice?
Should a need arise and you have specific questions or behavioral issues related to the dog you have adopted, we will work with you and our experienced volunteers and trainers to find solutions. Please also visit our Resources page for preliminary research.
In additional we have a list of boarding partners that can help when needed. Please let us know immediately so we can point you in the right direction so that neither you nor your sato are distressed.
Out Of Area Adoptions
Generally we will not adopt beyond a 75-minute radius of Washington, DC. We are a very small rescue and this ensures we can keep in close contact with our adopted pups.
Adoption Process
1) Browse Available Dogs
2) Send Your Application
3) Meet Your Sato
Once we receive your application we will reach out to schedule a phone interview and discuss the further steps in the process. You must have an approved application on file for your family to visit the chosen sato in their foster home. If you meet and fall in love, on a case-by-case basis, we can finalize the adoption then and you can take your sato home upon completing the paperwork. Alternatively, you can arrange to pick-up a couple of days later upon completion of the paperwork. Please note we cannot “hold” a sato for an adopter.
4) Finalize the Adoption
Once you have decided the pup is the perfect match for you and your family, we will email our adoption letter and contact. Please complete the adoption contract and adoption fee payment. Upon receipt of those, we will notify the foster that the sato can be released to their new adoptive pawrents. Thank you for adopting and providing a second chance to a deserving sato.
